WHAT IS KUNDALINI YOGA?

Kundalini Yoga is said to be the Yoga of Awareness, while its focus is on self-awareness and delivering an experience of our highest consciousness. The technology of Kundalini Yoga is a science of the mind and body used to elevate the spirit. It is an ancient practice designed  to awaken the full potential of human awareness in each individual -- recognizing our awareness, refining our intuition and activating our inner vitality.

For thousands of years, this sacred science was veiled in secrecy, passed along from master to chosen disciple. In 1969, Yogi Bhajan came West, introducing Kundalini Yoga to the United States. He taught the science and practice of Kundalini Yoga to give all the chance to live happy, healthy and spiritually elevated lives. Yogi Bhajan taught for nearly 40 years with the belief that: “Happiness is a birthright.”

 

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN CLASS?

The focus of Kundalini Yoga is on one’s personal experience and awareness through the practice of specific movements, sound, pranayama, mudras, concentration and meditation. Together, these tools automatically guide the energies of the body and the mind to a specific result or change of consciousness. We awaken the Kundalini in order to be able to call upon the full potential of the nervous and glandular systems and to balance the subtle system of chakras and meridians within the body.

We begin every class with our "Tune In" Mantra: "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo." Throughout class we focus on a Kundalini yoga set, meditation, and attention to breath. We end with deep relaxation, often accompanied by playing a gong. Before exiting class, we sing together again: "May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you, and the pure light within you, guide your way on."

ABOUT YOGI BHAJAN

Yogi Bhajan became Master of Kundalini Yoga® at the age of 16 in his native India. He came to the West in 1968. The authority to be the Mahan Tantric, Master of White Tantric Yoga®, was bestowed on him in 1970.

The practice of White Tantric Yoga®, as with most sacred Eastern wisdom, had previously been a tradition passed on from teacher to student in a mystical and selective way. As a pioneer of this age, Yogi Bhajan decided to open the experience of White Tantric Yoga® to anyone who wanted to commit to the discipline. In 1970 in Los Angeles, for the first time in history, White Tantric Yoga® was taught publicly.

Until 1986, Yogi Bhajan traveled throughout the world presenting as many as thirty workshops each year to thousands of students. In 1987, using his unique abilities as Master, together with modern technology, he began to present White Tantric Yoga® as a video-taped series. He said the tapes would continue to have the same effect when he was no longer in his physical body. This has proved true, and in fact since his passing from his physical body in October, 2004, thousands of students have confirmed that their Tantric experience is one of being in his presence.

Seva Simran Singh Khalsa, LAc., is a San Francisco based Kundalini Yoga Teacher, Integrative Healer and Wellness Consultant. He combines acupuncture, massage herbology, nutrition, yoga and meditation into a wholly integrated approach to living a healthy, happy, and harmonious life.

Seva Simran’s introduction to the practice of wellness began with Kundalini Yoga, through which his experiences were profound and life-changing. He immersed himself in the ancient teachings, studying closely with numerous renowned Kundalini teachers and enjoying the benefits of a strong yogic and meditative discipline.

Seva Simran has been teaching Kundalini Yoga in California since 2004 after receiving certification at Yoga West in Los Angeles. Today, you can find him teaching public classes at Yoga Tree Potrero Hill in San Francisco -- along with workshops, retreats and trainings throughout the state of California. His classes emphasize empowerment and growth to break unwanted habits, strengthen the intuition, and move past hidden limitations.
